December 2008

Recently Brian Molko was the celebrity subject for photographer Olaf Heines. Zeit Online have published a series of photographs called ‘Artists In The Face of Loneliness’.

According to Heines, this particular image is supposed to tell the tale of Brian as a lonely Dandy in the 21st century. The photograph with model Jule was taken in Berlin, 2008. It certainly evokes vivid imagery from the Placebo song, Special Needs; “…think of me stuck in my chair that has four wheels… remember me through flash photography and screams… remember me…”

Heines is not the first photographer to secure Brian as their striking feature subect. Some of you may also recall the gorgeous black and white image of Molks in JB Mondino’s ‘Guitar Eros’ in 2006.

In other band related news, Placebo have been announced as one of the acts for Rock-Am-Ring and Rock-Im-Park for the weekend 5-7 June 2009.

The lad’s first gig in over a year was a smashing one and to support a noble cause no less. Vocing against the prevalence of Human Trafficking, Placebo peformed at Angkor Wat, Cambodia on December 7th.

This show was also Steve Forrest’s first ever show with the band, and was certainly in extreme circumstances, including sweltering humidity. The line up also included Fiona Brice on strings.

The set list included ‘Because I Want You’, ‘Follow The Cops Back Home’ and then ‘Black-Eyed’ featuring Stefan Olsdal on a 70’s handheld electronic keyboard creating a wash of electro tones. ‘Meds’, ‘Post Blue’, ‘Blind’ and ‘Drag’ were brought in to crescendo the set, bringing the audience to their feet. A stripped down version of ‘Teenage Angst‘ was appropriately placed with its dark and reflective nature.

Rounding off the night was a spectacular revamped version of ‘Twenty Years’, before which Brian Molko delivered the bands commitment to the cause inviting us to take a minute to reflect on the prisoners, to spread the word and help to put a stop to this abhorrent form of modern slavery.

The concert will provide content for a series of television programmes produced by MTV EXIT to be broadcast in Cambodia and on MTV channels internationally in 2009. These specials will combine concert footage with important information about human trafficking. All MTV EXIT programming is produced rights-free and free of charge for all broadcasters and organizations.
