Placebo speak candily in a 10 minute podcast interview with Kerrang! magazine.

They discuss recording the new album, their positive outlook, why they had to part ways with drummer Steve Hewitt and how they found young newcomer Steven Forrest.

Download via iTunes podcast or through the Kerrang! website.

Stefan was in Amsterdam recently, he caught up with Spinner for a quick chat. Thanks to _boyangel for the translation.

After ink black “Meds” from 2006, it was quiet for a while around the three-piece.

Sworn friends singer/guitarist/front man Brian Molko and bassist Stefan Olsdal separate with their drummer, Steve Hewitt. They only found inspiration for new material again when Steve Forrest was introduced as new band member.

“Battle For The Sun” is more positive than their older work from the alternative rockers.

Spinner talked in a hotel bar in Amsterdam with bassist Olsdal, about the new album and the life of a rockstar in such a controversial band.

The bassist seems shy, he chooses his words carefully and every now and then he stares out of the window dreamily. Not very surprising since it’s over 20 degrees outside.

Outside is the real life, but wasn’t it exactly that kind of life that Placebo wanted to escape from?

As sucker-love.com announced in our scoop last week Placebo have officially confirmed that their next single will indeed be For What It’s Worth with a release date of June 1st.

It will be getting its first worldwide radio plays on Monday 20th April, carrying on tradition with the UK giving its first exclusive spin on Radio 1’s Zane Lowe show from 7.00pm. [time converter here]

To add to this the band has decided to make the single track of ‘For What It’s Worth’ available to download the following morning, on Tuesday 21st April, through as many iTunes stores as possible.

The single will be available on 7″, CD and Digital Download, featuring a cover of Nick Kershaw’s classic, “Wouldn’t It Be Good” as the B-side.

Additionally Placebo will exclusively reveal their brand new music video on myspace, Tuesday the 21st of April!

Track #2, ‘Ashtray Heart’ from the forthcoming Placebo album, Battle for the Sun has had an early preview in Japan. The song has been used in the end credits for ‘The Sekai Gyoten News’ (translation being ‘The Suprising World News’). This will continue from 8th April until end of June, shown at 21:00-21:54 every Wednesday.

Additionally, for Japanese users only, ‘Ashtray Heart’ is available to download via mobile with “Reco choku“.

If you’re lucky enough to have heard the song but cannot understand some of the lyrics, that may well be because you do not understand Spanish! The repetitive chorus is “Mi cenicero, mi cenicero, mi corazón es cenicero” which literally translates as “My ashtray, my ashtray, my heart is an ashtray.”

French newspaper Le Parisien ran this article on April 7th 2009. The focus of the article is on Molko’s french experiences, but it does delve into the subject of the band’s mortality and the somewhat sensitive issue of the departed Steve Hewitt.

Attached was this striking new promo image, click to view larger. Thanks to he_wears_heals, read the full translated article behind the jump:

Placebo Saved Themself

Worn down by fatigue, the English band remained silent for three years. Leader Brian Molko explains it for the first time, before a new album coming out.

Here comes Placebo again. The favorite British band of romantic teens, the one which found its biggest crowds in France where they sell thousands of albums and sell out Bercy’s and Zénith’s. Since “Meds”, in 2006, the trio had not given any news. The next step comes with “Battle for the Sun”, a sixth album, in stores June 8.

A new album and a brand new Placebo, without forgetting their basics: melancholy, darkness, androgynous. An image incarnated by the leader, Brian Molko, 36 years old, bilingual icon. Yesterday afternoon, just arriving in Paris, he gave us his very first interview. In French.

♥ On Monday April 6th 2009 Placebo filmed a four song set for french tv show Taratata. The appearance is set to air at some stage during May on France 4.

Many fans were lucky enough to attend the taping of this show and have been able to provide us with a breif recap.

The setlist for the evening reads as Battle For The Sun, For What It’s Worth, Ashtray Heart, Kitty Litter and once again the Nick Kershaw cover, Wouldn’t It Be Good.

In addition to Molko, Olsdal, Forrest and Lloyd on stage were Fiona Brice (strings) and ‘Nick’ on guitars/keys to replace Alex Lee.

♥ French magazine Rock One have apparently announced that ‘For What It’s Worth’ is set to be the band’s first single off the album, supposedly will hit us around April 20th! However, note there’s been no official word on this news…yet. Another fact learnt about the songs played for Taratata is that ‘Kitty Litter’ is supposedly a song written by Stef and Brian 15 years ago!

♥ Finally, The Quietus, a media blog, has posted a song by song review (‘spoilers’) of the full Battle For The Sun album. It has a rather negative tone to the piece, but is nonetheless informative in some parts.
